Elizabeth recently had another MRI which again showed no new tumor growth. Once again we are thankful to God for answering our prayers. She also had a check for any new signs melanoma. This check was also clear.

Elizabeth had very good news at Duke on Friday. There is still no sign of tumor regrowth. It has been nearly 4 years since the diagnosis and surgery. The Dr. at Duke has moved her next MRI out to 6 months rather than 4 months. She also had a check for more melanoma signs. This check up was also negative. We thank God for His answer to the prayers of many people over the last 4 years.

Elizabeth has not had an MRI in almost 4 months due to the suggestion of Duke. Her next MRI is set for December 14. Please pray for good results. She has been feeling as close to normal as any time in the last 3+ years. This has been a great blessing.

Great News Again

We had great news today. Elizabeth's MRI for the brain tumor was again unchanged. She was also told that the melanoma had not spread to her lymph nodes! She does have to go back to have two more spots removed next week but the surgery is not as extensive as two weeks ago. Thanks for all your prayers.

Elizabeth's Surgery

Elizabeth had surgery at Duke on Tuesday, August 3. The surgeon removed 6 spots and 3 lymph nodes. Two of the spots were confirmed melanoma. The lab results are due next week. We pray that the melanoma has not moved to the lymph nodes. The surgeon had made an encouraging comment when he stated the lymph nodes looked "unremarkable." We appreciate your prayers.

Our daughter Elizabeth posted this earlier today on her facebook account. "I just got some bad news from my Dermatologist. I had some spots taken off of my back last week and one came back as melanoma skin cancer. I will be going to see an oncologist in the next week. Please pray that they can get all of the cancer removed and that it won't spread." We are still awaiting the result of her last MRI regarding the brain tumor. Please pray!

Elizabeth has another MRI set for 3/8/10. Please pray for good results. Elizabeth, Bonnie, Will and Caroline just returned from 11 days in Florida. The weather was somewhat cool and Will got the flu but he is feeling much better now. In spite these two issues they still had a good time visiting Bruce's parents who spend the winter in Florida.

Trip to Duke

Today (Monday), Caroline had a check up at Duke for her feet. The doctor was very pleased with how her feet have respond to the treatment. She is walking very well but still has to wear the brace at night for the next year. She does not need to be seen by the doctor again until next year.

Elizabeth also had an MRI while at Duke. It will be a few days before we know the results. This was a regularly scheduled MRI. Please pray for another good report. We will post the results as soon as we can. Thank you for your continued prayers. - Bruce and Bonnie

Good News From Duke

Elizabeth called with good news after her appointment this morning with the oncologist. The latest MRI showed no change from the previous MRI's taken over the last several months. She also met with the neurologist regarding her seizure medication. The neurologist will again begin to reduce the amount of seizure medication starting in a couple of months.

Next Duke Appointment

Elizabeth is set to have her first appointment with a neurologist at Duke. Up to this point she has seen neurologists in Gainsville, GA and Ashville, NC. The neurologist regulate the seizure medication and do not deal with any other parts of the treatment. There is hope that the seizure medication can slowly be reduced.

Elizabeth will also have an MRI sometime in June and have the results sent to Duke. There is no need for her to see an oncologist at Duke until August. Please continue to pray for great results for all the testing that will be done. Thanks for your prayers. - Bruce and Bonnie

Elizabeth had a bout with the respiratory virus that was going around. She is feeling better as now everyone in the family has passed the "bug" around. Her next appointment at Duke is in February.
Caroline had some good news last week when we found out she will not need surgery for her feet. She will have the casts removed this Friday and then transition into some type of shoe brace. News on Elizabeth and Caroline

We are thankful for another good report from Duke. Elizabeth saw a new oncologist last week who reviewed all of the old MRI's and then compared those to the new MRI. He indicated that it is truly amazing that the tumor has not regrown based on her lack of treatment. It has been over one year since Elizabeth has taken her last round of chemo. Duke wants her to remain receiving MRI's every two months and visiting Duke every four months.

Baby Caroline also saw a specialist at Duke for some concerns about her feet. She was born with the bottoms of her feet facing each other (similar to praying hands). The local doctor was confident that Caroline's ankles had stretched ligaments that would eventually tighten and straighten the ankles to look normal. However, her ankles have not straightened and the specialist at Duke has determined that Caroline has two "club" feet. They immediately casted both legs all the way to her hips. Caroline must return to Duke for six straight weeks to be recasted each time. After the casting is finished they will wait three weeks and then do surgery on both achillies tendons. This will require an inpatient stay at Duke. She will then be placed in leg braces for two years. Once she begins to stand up and try to walk the braces will only need to be worn while she is sleeping.

Please pray for the following:
-Thanksgiving for another great report for Elizabeth
-The tumor will never return
-Caroline will be comfortable while she is wearing the casts and eventually the braces.
-Caroline's surgery may go very well when the time draws near.
-Caroline will be able to walk and run normally as she grows.

Another Duke Visit

Elizabeth visits Duke again on November 24. At the same time baby Caroline will be seen by a specialist at Duke for a problem with her feet. Both of her feet curve inward which is how she was born. The local doctors believe this is not a serious problem but she may need some form of braces for her ankles and feet. Duke finally called and indicated there was no change in the latest MRI using the "contrast" compared with the MRI without the contrast. This continues to be great news and we are grateful to God every day for what He has done. Today was Elizabeth's 25th birthday!!! Bonnie and I remembered back about 18 months ago when we wondered if we would see Elizabeth celebrate even one more birthday. Encouraging News But Still Waiting

The results for Elizabeth's latest MRI has been delayed because the local hospital where Elizabeth had the MRI taken forgot to send the disc to Duke. After Dan checked the status of the MRI the local hospital read the MRI themselves and sent the report to Duke. The report stated there was no change from previous MRI's. Duke will call when they actually see the disc and read the new MRI. We are grateful to God for the results thus far. We will post the results when we receive them. Earlier this week Elizabeth had an MRI with "contrast." The results are being sent to Duke where they will be reviewed by the Duke doctors. We hope to get the results sometime next week. Report From Duke

Today Elizabeth met with the Dr.'s at Duke for a regularly scheduled appointment. Yesterday she had an MRI here locally and the Duke Dr.'s today read the MRI. The Dr.'s stated the MRI should have been done using "contrast" which could not have been used during pregnancy. She will have to have another MRI using "contrast" in the next few days with the results then being sent to Duke.

The good news is that the MRI without the "contrast" showed a further shrinking of the swollen area in her brain. Any increase in the swollen area could mean tumor regrowth. We are very grateful to God for yet another good report!!! The Dr.'s want to be absolutely sure that they have a complete picture of everything that may be happening and that is why they want an MRI using "contrast." Next Trip to Duke

Elizabeth will be traveling to Duke for her regular check up on September 23. She will have an MRI prior to the visit and the Duke doctors will analyze the MRI. Please pray for another great report from the doctors regarding the tumor. Little Caroline is growing fast and now weighs 9lbs 11oz.

Update on Caroline

Today, August 21, Dan and Elizabeth took baby Caroline to a kidney specialist in Ashville. The Dr. indicated there is no need to do surgery on Caroline to remove the cysts on the kidney at this point. The Dr. will monitor the cysts over the next year. Caroline Bailey Pierce Has Arrived

We thank God for the arrival of Caroline Bailey Pierce at approximately 8:20 this morning. She appears healthy and is very cute as you can see. She has one kidney that is not functioning but the other kidney appears to be working fine as far as the doctors can tell. She was 7 lbs 13 oz and 19 1/2 inches long. New Baby Set To Arrive On July 25

Elizabeth had a regularly scheduled Dr. appointment today for the baby that is planned to be delivered on July 25 at 8:30 am. Elizabeth has been having a lot of pain recently but the Dr. stated everything is normal. They estimate the current weight of the baby to be 7 lbs and 7 oz. The ultrasound today still showed that the baby has one bad kidney that contained numerous cysts. Last week Elizabeth had another MRI regarding her brain tumor. The results of the MRI have been sent to Duke and we are awaiting the results. Please pray the that the baby may be born healthy and strong. Also please pray that Elizabeth's MRI is normal and shows no sign of tumor regrowth. We continue to be thankful for God's goodness to us. - Bruce and Bonnie

Duke In The News

A little over a year ago we were trying to decide where Elizabeth should have her brain surgery. There were a number of suggestions from a variety of people as to who was the best. We new nothing about brain tumors and sorting through the information was difficult. Looking back we now realize how God directed our path. Daniel and Teresa Pierce a had friend who was a physician in Ohio. This physician had a brother who was also a physician (a neurosurgeon) in another part of Ohio. The neurosurgeon in Ohio was very familiar with Duke and their work with brain tumors. He also personally knew Dr. Allan Friedman from Duke. He contacted Dr. Friedman and Dr. Friedman agreed to see Elizabeth for a consultation.

On a Sunday morning, this world famous neurosurgeon calmly sat in his office with 5 of us and asked Elizabeth a number of questions. He was confident that Elizabeth could benefit from surgery and then proceed to treatment after the surgery. He gave some great advice by telling her that every minute she worries about the tumor is a minute of her life wasted. We were all very scared but we found Dr. Friedman reassuring and confident.

The surgery lasted 2-3 hours. Bonnie and I happened to see Dr. Friedman in the hallway after he came out of surgery. We stopped him and asked him how Elizabeth was doing? In a matter of fact tone of voice he indicated that she was doing fine. The tone of voice also indicated that he did not expect anything else other than a successful surgery. Most of you know the rest of the story.

Today, Dr. Friedman has gotten a lot of attention by removing a brain tumor from Senator Edward Kennedy. We were humbled when we realized that Elizabeth was able to have Dr. Friedman perform her surgery when there were so many other possibilities to choose from. We thank God for leading us to a very qualified surgeon to start her treatment for the tumor. Please pray for healing for Senator Kennedy and many others suffering from brain tumors.

A TIME TO CELEBRATE – A MOUNTAINTOP HIGH

Once again God has proved Himself faithful!!!! We received great news today perhaps the best news in an entire year. Elizabeth and Dan met with a Duke oncologist at the Brain Tumor Center today. The Dr. stated they (at Duke) fully expected Elizabeth’s tumor to return by now especially because she stopped taking chemo several months ago. The Dr. then looked at her and stated “but miracles happen.” (Thank you God!!!) The area where the tumor was located continues to get smaller and the swelling continues to decrease. We don’t know where the Dr. stands with the Great Physician but we do know he gave credit to someone other than himself for the healing that has occurred.

Needless to say Bonnie and I cried tears of joy when we heard the news. The Dr. added that there is no need for Elizabeth to take chemo again after the baby is born. He encouraged her to breast feed the baby and then get into great shape physically including eating a very healthy diet. He then suggested that they would work on getting her off all seizure medications. This is in contrast to what her neurologist has been telling her regarding perhaps a lifetime of seizure medication. The Duke Dr. stated he intends to prove the neurologist wrong regarding the seizure medication issue.

If there was ever a doubt that God hears and answers prayers – may the doubt be removed forever. We wish to thank HIM for hearing and answering the prayers of hundreds of people who have been praying for Elizabeth for the last year. We wish to thank all of you for praying. It means more to us than you will ever know this side of eternity. We ask that you continue to pray for Elizabeth and the unborn baby she is carrying. Tomorrow they visit a specialist in Ashville regarding the baby and the kidney cysts. We will continue to update the blog in the future, as this is a journey in which you have all shared. Little Will turned 1 year old on March 29 and he had a birthday party. Attached you will find pictures of him as the center of attention. Elizabeth has another MRI today (4/7/08) in Blairsville. Next week she travels to Duke for an appointment with her oncologist. They will evaluate the latest MRI. She also has another appointment in Ashville for the unborn baby. They will continue to monitor the kidney development of the baby.

News From Ashville

Today Dan and Elizabeth had an appointment with an OB specialist in Ashville for the second time. The specialist ran a number of tests on the unborn baby. The doctor discovered that the baby has only one functioning kidney. There are a number of cysts in and around the kidney which is preventing it from forming properly and functioning. The other kidney looks fine and there is no reason to believe that the healthy kidney will develop cysts. The doctor believed the cysts had nothing to do with the medication or chemo that Elizabeth is taking or has taken. The doctor was actually optimistic about the overall health of the child. The more severe birth defects, i.e. spina bifida, that were possible are not evident at this time. We continue to praise God for all the blessings He has provided. Please continue to pray for Elizabeth's health and the health of the unborn baby.
Dan and Elizabeth have purchased a home after renting for one year. We are all busy painting and trying to get them ready to move in a couple of weeks. We will post their new address once they move.

Important Prayer Request

Hello everyone,

It has been a long time since I have written anything on here. We have some very exciting, scary news that I have been trying to keep a secret for a while. God has chosen to show us yet again that we are not in control even when we try to plan how everything should go.

We found out after my last appointment at Duke in mid December that we are going to have another baby. We have had numerous tests and ultrasounds done already and everything seems normal with the baby so far. The scary part is that I have not been able to take Chemo because it is unknown the affect it can have on a baby. Without knowing, I took one round of Chemo while pregnant.

My prayer is that the baby is perfect and my tumor will never grow back and I will never have to take Chemo again. My cancer doctor suggested that we terminate the pregnancy thinking that there may be a chance that my tumor would return. I told him that if there was no solid information that I was not willing to do that. God created this life in me for a reason in spite of the situation my life is in. I know that he will protect me and the baby through all of this. I have no reason not to trust Him. He has taken care of me through every step of this and will continue to.

Will and the little ? will be 16 months apart. I am due July 31^st or August 1^st. Please pray that there will be no bumps in the road and God will give me strength. I have had morning sickness. I think it is tapering off a little finally. Thank you for all of your prayers. I will try to keep you all posted.

A Dear Friend

About six years ago we were part of a small group Bible study soon after we joined Trinity Church. As we were all getting to know each other we became aware that one woman in our group was suffering from a brain tumor. Her name was Sherry Hagerman. Her and her husband Dave had been through a lot with numerous treatments and at least one surgery. One evening we gathered around Sherry and prayed for her because her tumor had again begun to grow. In the next few weeks Sherry was informed that her tumor had shrunk to about one half the size. We all rejoiced with her and continued to pray for a full recovery.

In April of 2007 Elizabeth was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Sherry’s husband Dave informed us that Elizabeth and Sherry had the same type of tumor. Little did we know that six years earlier we were praying for healing from a brain tumor that our daughter would be inflicted with six years later.

Last night, January 17, 2008, Sherry went home to be with the Lord. Her tumor had returned again and became very aggressive. We had the privilege of visiting with Dave and Sherry in early December when we were in Michigan. This was a very special time for all of us. We would like to pass along our sympathy to the Hagerman family as they mourn the loss of a wife and mother. Please pray for peace and comfort for all of Sherry’s family.

Sherry and Dave were an inspiration to all of us and gave us hope and encouragement. She will be missed!

Elizabeth has gotten over her virus and her appetite has also returned. She still has some occasional nausea but overall she is doing well. The big news today is that Brad and his wife Greta just had their first baby making Bonnie and I grandparents again. Mother and child are doing fine. The baby's name is Evie Elizabeth Lankheet. We plan to make a trip to Michigan sometime next week. We praise God for Elizabeth's continued healing and for bringing another wonderful life into our family. Elizabeth continues to feel a little better each day. She had some sort of virus (typical cold symptoms) that she has had for about 3 weeks. She has almost gotten over it but she still has some sinus issues. Will celebrates his 9 month birthday on 12/29. He is very active and seems to have avoided all the viruses and things that kids catch at his age. We have a great deal to be thankful for during this Christmas season. Our son Brad and his wife Greta are expecting their first child at any moment. We plan to make the trip back to the cold north country as soon as the baby is born. News From Duke

Elizabeth met with the Duke doctors on Tuesday. There is another good report as the area of the brain that contained the tumor continues to shrink. They are very encouraged as this area continues to get smaller with each MRI. The doctors gave her new nausea medication as the old medication does not appear to be very effective any longer. Elizabeth started chemo without a problem during this dose. However, by the third day she was again feeling terrible which has continued through today (Wednesday). She has not eaten in about 3 days and is too weak to get out of bed. Chemo ended on Monday but the effects are lingering. Please pray for a speedy recovery from this dose of chemo. She and Dan are expected to visit Duke next week for her regular check up assuming she feels well enough to travel. She had an MRI taken recently and this will be reviewed by the Duke doctors. Chemo Begins

Elizabeth has had the best week since her surgery in April. She and Dan have taken care of Will without outside help for over a week. She is enjoying being a full time mom. Her liver enzymes are high and caused one doctor some concern. Another doctor believes the enzyme level may be a result of the seizure medication and he is not as concerned. She begins another dose of chemo on Thanksgiving Day.

Please pray for:
1. A reduction in the liver enzymes
2. the chemo will be easier to deal with during this round

Elizabeth Feeling Better

Elizabeth is feeling better and has even regained a small appetite. There has been no more slurred speech. She has her white blood count tested weekly but we have not heard any results for this past week. Her bones have mostly stopped hurting from the shot given to improve the white count. She still has occasional nausea and is often tired. Thank God for answered prayers as she is noticeably improved. - Bruce and Bonnie

Elizabeth seems to have gotten rid of the virus. Thank you to everyone for praying. She received her shot on Thursday and her bones hurt as a result. She also had a bit of a scare yesterday when she began slurring her speech. After contact with medical personnel she took a new seizure medication and ate some food. We are unsure if the slurred speech was due to low sugar because she has not been eating or if there is some seizure activity again in her brain. This morning her speech was fine and she has begun to again eat small amounts of food. She has an early November appointment with a new neurologist in Ashville who will deal with the seizure issues if there are any. Please pray for:

1. No more slurred speech
2. Thanksgiving for healing from the virus
3. Reduction in bone pain
4. Next MRI in November will again be clean

Elizabeth was making good progress and even had started to drive occasionally. She has again started another dose of chemo but her white blood count continues to drop over the last several weeks. She has contracted some sort of virus due to the low white count. Added with the chemo effects she is once again miserable. She cannot eat due to nausea. The cancer doctor will give her a shot of a drug tomorrow that will increase her white blood count. The side effects are extreme bone pain. Please pray for the following:

1. Immediate healing from the virus
2. No more viruses or illnesses will occur
3. Chemo will become easier on her body over the next few months
4. The bone pain will not occur
5. The tumor will never return

Elizabeth is feeling a little better each day. She continues to be swollen from the steroids but this too is decreasing. The doctors indicated it may take several weeks for all of the effects of the steroids to completely wear off. The nausea feelings are somewhat less but remain at times. She is still tired which requires her to nap a couple of times during the day. The initial report from the recent MRI is that there is still no sign of the tumor! The void left by the surgery has gotten smaller. Please continue to pray for good MRI results.

An update on Bruce and Bonnie. We have rented our home in Michigan. There is a possibility that the renter is interested in purchasing the home. We thank God for supplying some financial relief and the possibility that the home may sell in a difficult market.

New Round of Chemo

Everyone returned safely from their respective travels. We thank God for the safety He provided. Elizabeth began the second dose of her monthly chemo treatment. The first month seemed to be fine but this month has been very hard on her. She is very tired, sleeping almost constantly some days, nauseated and she has some headaches. The good news is that she is completely off steroids for the first time in 5+ months. Some of the above symptoms may also be her body adjusting to life without steroids. She had another MRI yesterday. This is a regularly scheduled MRI that was supposed to happen every 8 weeks but this time it was only 6 weeks for some unknown scheduling reason. We will be prayerfully awaiting the results. Please pray for:

1. Relief from the nausea and headaches.
2. Increased energy levels
3. Tumor free MRI result

Elizabeth is slowly feeling better each day. She is only taking a small amount of steroids each day and is trying to wean herself off from these. The Doctors indicated the last small amount would be the most difficult. She has had a few headaches but they are not severe. She is very tired as a result of the steroid reduction and the new chemo dose. She only takes the chemo once a month for 5 consecutive days but the dose is much higher than the first dose.

1. Pray for her continued healing and that the tumor will not return.

2. Safety in travel as Dan, Elizabeth, Will and Dan's family travel to Texas for a wedding this weekend.

3. Safety for Bruce and Bonnie as we travel to MI this weekend to wrap up some things at our home in MI that is now rented. Bruce also has a college reunion in East Lansing.

This is the first chance I have had by the computer lately. We are so excited. Really it has taken a little while for it to sink in completely. I don't know why we were suprised. God has been faithful the whole time but to hear those words from the doctor was just amazing. We made him repeat himself a few times and clarify what he meant. God is so good ! He still performs miracles that is for sure. I fall to my knees in awe of how powerful He is and how he has shown me His mercy and grace.

GREAT NEWS FROM DUKE !!!!!

Elizabeth and Dan met with the doctors at Duke today. The doctors examined the MRI that was taken last week. In the words of the doctor "there is no sign of the tumor." We are still trying to comprehend the good news but needless to say there has been great joy and excitement over what God has done!

Elizabeth must still complete another round of chemo which is part of the original treatment plan. Chemo should not have the devastating effects that she experienced during radiation.

Please pray:

1) for relief from the headaches that still appear on occasion

2) for no side effects from the chemo

3) that the tumor will not return. Tumors can return within the first two years after successful treatment

4) give thanks to God for His faithfulness and answering the prayers of many people

New MRI and Duke Visit

Elizabeth had an MRI taken yesterday (Wednesday) in Blairsville GA. The results of this MRI will be given to the doctors at Duke next week so they can evaluate the effectiveness of the chemo and radiation. Elizabeth and Dan will be traveling to Duke next Tuesday for a meeting with the doctors. Please pray for a very good report! She will begin another round of chemo in the next few weeks. The exact date is unknown. She will take a much heavier dose of the same chemo she has already taken. Although this dose will be higher the frequency of taking the chemo is less. She only has to take 5 pills in a month.

Elizabeth is cutting down her steroids and is now about 35% down from the maximum dose she was taking a couple of weeks ago. Today she had a severe headache but it is unknown if the headache was related to the withdrawal from the steroids or if she was overly tired. Please pray for relief from her headaches. Today was another good day. Physically I felt pretty good. No major pain. That is a huge blessing. I think it is my fourth day on the one less steroid. Dan, Will and I just spent the day at the house together . We just kind of relaxed. I still don't have much energy. Hopefully that will change here pretty soon. It gets pretty frustrating not having any energy to take care of Will or go anywhere. I know I just have to take it one day at a time and I am thankful for the progress that has been made sometimes it is just hard. Please pray that I will feel encouraged and that I will have increased energy.

God is sovereign

Just when I begin to feel doubtful about God's strength or the fact that He is in complete control He proves Himself to me again that He is in control and shows me that He is holding me in the palm of His hand. There is no place in this world that I would rather be. Today was a major stride. Today I will have cut back on the steroid that I have been on for the last 3 months to 3 pills when I had been taking 4 pills a day for brain swelling. I have experienced no major side effects. That is a miracle because before I had major headaches and joint pain. Praise GOD!!! The day is not over yet but I have faith that everything is going to be okay. Continued prayers are of course appreciated. Thank you all so much again for all of your support and prayers. I love you all.

Last night was a good night, I was able to sleep quite well with little pain. The new seizure medicine I think has started to regulate its self which has left me feeling less anxiety about having another seizure and has calmed my nerves. God has proven again that He is in control and never leaves our side. Please continue to pray that I will not have any more seizures they are very scary, please also pray that I will not have any more or anxiety about what the future may hold. It would be great to think that things will only get better from here.

some relief from pain

Hello everyone,
Today I believe you could say was a good day. God gave me endurance and relieved my pain in my joints. That was a serious answer to prayer. I was able to rest quite a bit today which was also a huge blessing. The new seizure meds really make me drowsy which is better than not being able to rest at all.

Dan did some research today about the steroid that I am currently taking and found out many new details. They have been causing extreme swelling in joints and face, insomnia, joint pain, extreme appetite, face breakouts, night sweats, and overall discomfort. But yet the steroid is what keeps me from having brain swelling. I don't even pretend to understand it but the doctors seem to know what is going on. Praise God for that!!!

Short Update

Elizabeth experienced a great deal of pain in her knee joints today as the doctors decreased her steroids. After Dan consulted with the doctor they again increased the steroid. She is on the maximum dosage and needs to slowly be taken off them due to the negative side effects. Please pray for relief from the pain and wisdom for the doctors as they decrease her medication. There was a preliminary report from the MRI taken on Friday. It showed nothing unusual and it was consistent with the MRI of a person who just finished radiation treatment. The doctors did not comment on whether or not there were portions of the tumor remaining. This was a positive answer to prayer as there was concern that her brain had swelled excessively causing a seizure. Praise God for answered prayer.

Just a little update for specific prayer. At about 7:30 am on Friday I experienced another seizure. It was not nearly as severe as the prior ones that I had experienced so that was a huge blessing. I did not lose consciousness and was able to speak through the entire thing. No one tried to stick their fingers down my throat this time or anything so I didn't injure anyone during this one. Dan's mom's finger has just healed from the first seizure experience. They did still consider this seizure a grand mal seizure though because my face was drawn and twitching. It was scary but not nearly as bad as before. We had to spend the day on Friday at the hospital for blood work and waiting on an MRI. We should know the results tomorrow on the MRI.

There were probably many factors that played into this seizure. One being extreme exhaustion. The steroids cause insomnia so I had not been sleeping at all or maybe just an hour a night or so I believe that would pay a toll on someone not in my health situation. I have experienced some relief from the insomnia the last couple of nights. I am able to take benedryl to help sleep. I feel like I have slept more in the last 2 nights
than I have in the last 5 weeks or so.

I have been so so blessed to have so much help with family. They have all been such an amazing support for me. Please pray that they will all have continued energy and strength. I praise God's Holy name for the way I have felt his presence and peace in my life.

More Prayers Needed

Yesterday (Friday) was a difficult day for all of us. We (Bruce and Bonnie) were traveling and had a 3+ hr. breakdown. During that time Elizabeth had what is being described as another grand mall seizure. This seizure was much less severe than those she had back in early April. She did not lose consciousness and was able to talk during the seizure. She took her regularly scheduled seizure medication and the seizure went away and did not return. She and Dan then spent the entire day at the hospital getting blood work completed and having an MRI. The doctors are trying to determine if the medications may have caused the seizure or the damage from the radiation is causing the problem. Today, Elizabeth is feeling much better. She slept well for the first time in several weeks. Her heavy dose of steroids is causing insomnia. Please pray for a good MRI result and that reason for the seizure and near seizures may be something easily remedied. Also pray for restful sleep for Elizabeth.

Treatment Update

Thanks be to God for relief from the headaches. As of last night Elizabeth was feeling better. Thank you to everyone who has been praying for relief from the headaches. All of us are encouraged by your postings and knowing that so many people are still praying. We are convinced this is a marathon and not a sprint. Persistence in prayer over the long term is needed and greatly appreciated. Last night was Elizabeth's last dose of chemo for 30 days and today is her last radiation treatment. We pray that she begins to feel better over the next couple of weeks as the radiation and chemo effects wear off. As of now there is no time set for the next MRI but we would assume it would be in the next 30 days. She may have to return to Duke for a post operative visit which is normal after the first round of treatment. A heavy dose of chemo is supposed to begin in 30 days from today.

Bruce and Bonnie will be returning to our home in NC on Friday with our last load of "stuff." Please pray for safety during the travel. It is very hard for us to be away from Elizabeth when she is struggling. God has taught us more reliance on Him during these times. Thanks again for your prayers. - Bruce and Bonnie

Elizabeth's headaches have actually gotten worse and more frequent. She has only three days of radiation remaining. The doctors believe that the radiation is causing swelling and the headaches. Elizabeth was rushed to the hospital last night with a terrible headache. Apparently the pain went from her neck into her brain. The doctors gave her something for the pain and a muscle relaxer. This seemed to help and today she will meet with her Oncologist to see if there are any more concerns. Please pray that this was just a bi-product of the radiation and that this problem will not return. We (Bonnie and Bruce) are in MI for a few days packing a few more things that were left behind at the end of the move. God continues to supply grace each and every day of this situation. 4 Treatments to go!!!

We are so excited to celebrate the fact that I have only 4 more radiation treatments to go! Praise God it is almost over! Chemo will continue on for a while yet, but it is certainly good to know that the daily trips will be coming to an end this Thursday. I will continue to have bi-weekly check-ups with the Dr’s but that will be much easier than the every day radiation. I feel extremely blessed to have had all of your love, support and prayers. I have felt the Lords presence in my life more than ever the last few months. My hope and prayer is that I will never come down from this mountain top experience and I will always feel God’s presence in my life the way I have the last few months.

Good News

Elizabeth's appointment with the neurosurgeon in Gainesville occurred yesterday. The surgeon believed that her seizure medication needed to be increased. She was taking a dose that was very small for what is usually given to an adult. He was very reassuring and he did not believe there to be any more obvious problems. An EEG was given to determine the amount of seizure activity in Elizabeth's brain. The results will be available later in the week. Praise God for good news and His answer to prayers. - Bruce and Bonnie

Prayer Request

Elizabeth has been experiencing some problems in the last two days. She has had pre-seizure sensations but has not had a seizure. This is the first sign of any seizure possibilities since the surgery. Her local doctors have referred her to a doctor in Gainsville GA for a neurological assessment which is to be done on Tuesday (tomorrow) morning. They will be trying to determine if any of the medications may be interfering with each other. Please pray for a good report on the assessment and that the problem may be easily diagnosed and remedied.

Bonnie and I have made the transition to NC. We are slowly clearing out the boxes and finding a place for everything. Bonnie and Teresa are taking turns spending the night and the following day taking care of Will and transporting Elizabeth to her treatments. Elizabeth is still in good spirits and has been a great example for all of us. She takes one day at a time and doesn't seem to worry about tomorrow. I am reminded what Jesus said when He told us "...not to worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself."

Elizabeth is about half way through her radiation and chemo treatments. She is in good spirits but she is fatigued and somewhat nauseated. She had to begin taking steriods again due to swelling in the brain caused by the radiation. The steriods have lessoned her headaches but they have side effects which are uncomfortable. Baby Will is almost 15 lbs and growing fast. He is such a blessing to hold during these difficult times. God continues to give us comfort and strength as we transition from Michigan to North Carolina. Prayer requests.

1) Elizabeth's headaches, nausea and fatigue may lesson.
2) Healing for Elizabeth which will be complete and permanant.
3) The homes of Bruce and Bonnie and Daniel and Teresa Pierce may sell quickly for a fair price.

Elizabeth's Treatment

Elizabeth in now in full swing with both chemo and radiation. It appears the nausea is not any worse and at times it is slightly improved. She is having difficulty with the restrictive headgear that she must wear during the radiation treatment. She is also very tired.

Will has begun to sleep for longer periods of time at night. He is growing fast and is now about 17 lbs. He is such a blessing!

Please pray: 1) Elizabeth will adjust to wearing of the headgear during the treatment 2) Her fatigue may be lessened 3) Praise God for some relief from the nausea 4) Success in treatment and that the tumor may never return 5) Bruce and Bonnie may have a smooth transition from their home in Michigan

Dear Friends: After much prayer and with some mixed feelings we have decided to sell our home in Michigan and move to North Carolina to be near Elizabeth, Will, and Dan. This will be difficult for us as Bonnie and I have lived in Michigan for our entire lives. As of today, Bonnie has resigned her position at Trinity Church. I will be resigning from my position at the East Lansing Court effective some time in July. God has shown us many things through this trial. One lesson that became obvious early on was that we were too busy with life issues. With all of the praying and waiting over the past 9 weeks our lives have slowed down in many ways. Bonnie and I have reconnected and we are trying not to take relationships and family for granted as was so easy to do when we were so busy.

Our home in Eaton Rapids is now for sale. We would like to sell the home without using a Realtor to avoid the fees and commissions. Please contact us at our new email address brucelankheet@yahoo.com for further details on the house.
Our old email address will be discontinued in approximately two weeks.

Elizabeth was supposed to start radiation on Tuesday but it has been canceled due to a problem with the equipment. We anticipate that treatment will begin tomorrow. Her chemo dosage will be reduced during radiation. She continues to feel about the same with periods of fatigue and slight nausea but overall she feels quite well.

Prayer requests: 1) Smooth transition and move for Bruce and Bonnie 2) Our home in Michigan may sell quickly and for a fair price 3) Elizabeth's overall health may continue to be good with no complications from the treatment. 4) The tumor may completely be gone and never return.

Treatment Continues

Elizabeth has now completed 7 days of chemo with 42 to go. She is taking Temador or Temedor which is a chemo drug especially designed for brain tumors. Radiation will begin on 5/29. Elizabeth has been generally feeling well considering the situation. She is in good spirits and we enjoy hearing her laugh just like the old Elizabeth. At times she is very tired and this limits her mobility. Food often does not appeal to her but she forces herself to eat. We expect additional tiredness as radiation begins. Bonnie and I have been taking care of Will (mostly Bonnie) all through the nights. We forgot what it is like to sleep in 2-3 hour increments but he is worth the lack of sleep. Dan's parents will soon arrive from Ohio to relieve us of the nighttime duties sometime next week. We will still be needed during the day to assist Elizabeth and Will while Dan begins to refocus on his work.

Prayer Requests: 1) Relief of nausea and fatigue for Elizabeth. 2) The treatment will be successful with no health complications. 3) The tumor will not ever regrow.

I just wanted to give a little update. I started my Chemo treatments on Saturday night. It is a nightly pill. The last couple of days I have felt tired and a little sick but it is nothing unbearable. God promises to never give us more than we can handle and I know that to be true. Will is doing fantastic. He is pretty bummed that he has to go in for his 2 month shots this week. That will be something to cry about.Thank you all so much for your continued thoughts and prayers. I love you all and am so encouraged by all your comments.

Elizabeth has been feeling very tired, nauseaded, and now has a slight headache for the last two days. Please pray that this is just part of the ups and downs in the healing process and that complete healing will be the final outcome. We keep reminding ourselves that full recovery could take up to six weeks. She had been feeling so well after only 2 1/2 weeks that we foget that surgery was not that long ago. Hey everyone, Elizabeth and Dan here.

We had a meeting on Monday with the Oncologist to discuss the plans for treatment. It turns out that Elizabeth will begin Chemo and Radiation on the 29th and treatment will run every day for the next 7 weeks.

We have learned that Chemo has seen significant advancements in recent years and will be in pill form. The side affects are fatigue and Nausea. As for the Radiation she will receive the maximum dose possible in an attempt to shrink the remaining tumor and lower the chances of regrowth, the side affects for radiation are hair loss and fatigue.

We have learned that the chances for regrowth are the highest in the next 2 years but if it does not regrow before then, there is approximately an 80% chance that it will not ever regrow. This was encouraging considering that the usual diagnosis for the same tumor would be much more severe. Typically the type of tumor Elizabeth has occurs in 45-50 year old men and a chromosome deficiency different than her's is present. This type of tumor typically occurs in approximately 9 out of 1-million people. Because of Elizabeth's Chromosome deficiency hers is more rare...more like 1 out of 10 million.

We continue to praise God for the blessings he has given us. It has been a great joy to witness His hand working in each stage of this journey. Will is doing fantastic it is such a thrill for us watch him grow more every day.

We are reminded that the only hope for anyone regardless of what trials they may be facing is a relationship with Christ. This is so much more for the two of us than a knowledge of God or His existence. This is a relationship that can not be achieved by good deeds, church attendance or a "religious" family or upbringing it can only be obtained through a persons faith, repentance and Gods grace. Life is short and no one has a guarantee of tomorrow. Our hope and prayer through all of this is that God will be glorified and those of you who have not yet made a personal commitment to follow Jesus Christ would do so.

This is the first chance I have had to be able to post anything. Thank you everyone for your prayer and concern. It is so comforting to know so many are praying. I love you all so much and wish I could see you all face to face. I can really feel all of the prayers being answered daily. I can not explain the extreme peace that I have had through this whole ordeal. We will try to keep this updated as treatment begins.

Yesterday we finally received news from pathology regarding the make up of the tumor. It is called an anaplasticoligodendroglioma. I am not 100% certain of the spelling but it it close. It has been classified as a category 3 tumor. That means that Elizabeth will need chemotherapy and radiation to treat the remaining parts of the tumor that were unable to be removed during surgery. This may sound not so good at first but we are very encouraged. For the first time a medical person has told us that this tumor can be beaten. It is the best type of category 3 tumor that is treatable. Dan asked specifically if this meant that if the treatment is successful that the tumor could permanently be defeated. The answer was "yes." This brought us great joy as the outlook for most glioma tumors is not good. In fact, the medical people in Atlanta where she was originally scheduled to have the tumor removed were very blunt indicating that this tumor would shorten her life. We felt this report was an answer to prayer as we have been asking people to pray for a good pathology report. One more answer to prayer has been Elizabeth's pain level. She has been off from all prescription pain medications for the last 2 days. Yesterday she did not even take an over counter pain reliever until bedtime. Considering they opened up her brain just 11 days ago this an amazing answer to prayer!!

I forgot to mention that we have all returned to Murphy NC which is where Dan and Elizabeth live. This is 6 hours west of Duke. More good news is that it appears that Elizabeth can take her treatment here locally. The Duke doctors are recommending that we find somewhere closer to home for treatment. The treatment will consist of chemotherapy to be taken in pill form. The radiation will be given 5 days a week for 6 consecutive weeks. A second treatment will be needed in one year. The second treatment sounds preventative in nature. We expect her first treatment to begin within 7-10 days.

This morning Elizabeth is having the staples removed from her head. In 2 days she will be able to wash all of hair for the first time. She is in good spirits and continues to be a tremendous inspiration for all of us. Her left arm and hand continue to improve. We were originally told that it may take 6 weeks for all of the use of her arm/hand to return.

We will try and get Elizabeth to read your comments every 2-3 days. Right now our Internet connection is non functioning and we must drive into town to find a free wi-fi connection. I want to thank all of you for your prayers and comments that you have posted.

Prayer needs: 1) The right Oncologist will be found here locally to minimize the drive for the treatment. 2) Treatment will be 100% successful 3) Elizabeth's health during the treatment. 4) Continued comfort and peace for all of us. 5)Praise for answered prayers on the pain and a treatable tumor.

God saved Elizabeth from seizures while she was pregnant with Will which could have seriously affected his health. He is so perfectly precious.

Update on Elizabeth Evening of May 8

Elizabeth had her best day so far. She was awake all day and held and fed the baby. She helped Dan give the baby his first full bath. Her pain is lessening but is still significant. She smiled and even laughed throughout the day. Dan and Elizabeth went to a consultation this morning where social workers, doctors, and couselors were present. They talked about living with a brain tumor and their support system. Information was also presented on various treatment methods. We are unsure if all patients are sent to this consultation or just those whom they anticipate will receive chemo/radiation. Sometimes we overthink situations rather than just waiting upon God. The pathology people now say it could be as late as Friday or even Monday of next week to get the final results of the tests.

Update on Elizabeth

Yesterday Elizabeth met with the Oncologist hoping to receive the results of the pathology report. Unfortunately the Dr. stated they had to send the tumor tissue back for further analysis as there was an area of possible concern. Tumor tissue is rated either as slow growing (category 1 or2) or as fast growing (category 3 or 4). Often the tumor can be made up of cells in different categories. If any fast growing cells are found then the entire tumor is classified as fast growing. The inital response from the surgeon indicated it appeared to be a slow growing tumor. However, he indicated that pathology would determine the exact make up of the tumor.

Treatment for a category 1 or 2 would likely mean Elizabeth would be sent home and her conditioned monitored with MRI's every few months. Category 3 or 4 will likely mean immediate chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Elizabeth is in good spirits and continues to improve daily. The 50 staples in her head should be able to be removed by the end of the week. She will then be able to wash her hair for the first time in nearly two weeks. Her swelling has diminished however it remains significant. Both eyes are now open and the multiple color around the one eye is 90% gone. Her left arm is week and of little use. We are anticipating the movement and strength in the arm to return over the next few weeks. The left side of her face is numb, however she is able to give a full smile now rather than just a partial. The incision ends in front of her right ear where the jaw is hinged. This makes chewing very painful. Food does not taste good and eating in not pleasant. She is able to hold the baby for short periods of time throughout the day. She still has trouble sleeping due to the pain. Baby Will is doing great and has been a true blessing through this trial.

Prayer request: Please pray for the following: 1) favorable pathology report where no chemo or radiation is needed; 2) Pain reduction 3) Good rest 4) Healing so that she has full use of her arm and face 5) Strength and comfort for all of us.

God has been faithful through this very difficult time. He has provided peace and comfort when we needed it the most. We continue to trust Him through whatever lies ahead. Thank you all for your prayers. They help more than you can imagine. Praise God from whom all blessing flow. - Bruce and Bonnie
